All Characters: Dimo Jenka Maxim Oggie

Historical Notes

The following were notes made while this was in development. They do not necessarily represent the final state of the thing.

Dimo Oggie Maxim

The Three Jagers. The three of them are clearly in-game, because they're among the most requested characters, but they're also among the hardest ones to write. My plan is that they will mostly be forces of chaos, but we'll need to come up with some plot for them.

The trickiest problem with them is that they are so inseparable that they're hard to distinguish. Notes about the three of them together go here; notes about the individuals go on their own pages. Some of these notes probably apply to all Jagers, but stuff we see specifically from them gets marked down here.

They first appear on (v4, p100), hanging from the neck. They've been doing so for two days so far (v4, p101), and don't seem to be terribly inconvenienced; Jagers are really tough.

As observed in Jagers, they appear to be almost literally fearless. Specifically, Jagers just don't seem to have a fear of death. On (v4, p100), Dimo and Oggie remark hopefully that they might die before "she" (apparently Jenka) finds out about what happened to them, and we don't really get the impression that they're kidding.

Decent pictures of all three can be seen on (v4, p100-101).

One gets the distinct impression that, while everyone has heard of Jagerkin, most people don't know much about them (v4, p100-101). And what they do know isn't good (v4, p102): they have a not-undeserved reputation as killing machines. They intimidate the heck out of everyone, even more when they are being "friendly" (v5, p19). Indeed, Marie is quite explicit that people hate Jagers on (v5, p42).

Agatha formally takes command of them on (v4, p115). She doesn't quite trust them, and she's still a tad scared of them, but she recognizes that they can be helpful if properly commanded, and she has an instinctive understanding of how to treat them.

Nobody realizes that Jenka is part of the group, and they use that to their advantage. On (v4, p115-116), they "chase" her out of town. Note that they're all fairly good liars, and quicker on their feet mentally than most people would realize. It isn't clear whether that's common to all Jagers, or if these three are above-average.

On (v4, p116), they refer to the "Ancient Contract", implying that this is the bond between the Jagerkin and the Heterodynes. What is the nature of the contract? Do we want to make a guess at this? It has the potential to make a great plot, but one relatively likely to become truly apocryphal. Still, so long as the Foglios don't deal with the topic before gametime, it might be a lot of fun to take a stab at. If we go in this direction, then we probably pull all five major Jagers into the story -- Jenka and Khrizhan as well as the core three.

One of the most interesting pages relating to the Jagers is (v4, p118). It makes it clear that Jenka is at least loosely in charge. It is clear that they were looking for a Heterodyne! How did they know she existed? Were they, in fact, looking for Agatha, or a different Heterodyne? Note that Jenka is surprised that they found a girl, implying that they were looking for a boy. Does Theo play into this somehow? Jenka leaves to get instructions about what to do with Agatha, and we get the impression that when she returns, they will be doing something with her...

The three reappear on (v5, p14), and it's clear that they make all the difference: with the three of them, the Circus members stand a chance against the army of monsters. They are fierce fighters, and revel in monster-killing. There's a vicious side to the Jagers, which seems to be more held in check by their allegiances than caused by it. That said, they understand that ordinary people prefer that they not kill any friends (v5, p24), and they are terribly proud when they succeed.

They join the Circus, and are assigned to be clowns, on (v5, p24-25). This has one of the classic Jager arguments. In general, they are distinctly goofy -- see Oggie's misdirection of Lars on (v5, p26).

Jagers will eat pretty much everything (v5, p41).

IMPORTANT: The Jagers know Adam personally (v5, p41)! They also respect him deeply, and admire his fighting prowess. This breaks the brain of people who were raised on the parodies of him.

They don't like to be used, but are always up for a good fray. The correct strategy for using them is to simply ask them to help with a fight, which they just think of as fun (v5, p42-43).

They are hot-headed, even with Agatha -- when she ticks them off, they are capable of at least briefly getting angry with her (v5, p50). Indeed, it appears that they like it when they mix it up with her: apparently, a reminder of the Good Old Days with the Bad Heterodynes.

And what is it with Jagers and hats?

The relationship between Agatha and the Jagers is very complex. Note, in (v5, p51), that even though they know a lot of what's going on, and they think they know the right thing to do, they still feel that they need her permission to act on their plans. How does this relate to the Conflicting Loyalties plot?

The wild Jagers are explicitly sharper than the ordinary ones that work for Klaus (v5, p51), or at least they believe they are. There seems an implication that a Jager requires a measure of danger to stay sharp.

On (v5, p51-52), we get the story of the Jagers' history -- at least, the public version. It raises a bunch of interesting questions. For example, why did the Jagers need Klaus so much? Is there a fundamental imperitive for them to work for someone, or is it just a matter of protection against the humans who hate them? What is the nature of the bond between the Jagers? It's clear that going "wild", away from the clan, has been extremely hard on our three. And once again, what is the bond between the Jagers and Heterodynes, that requires them to collectively hold to their pretense that there are Heterodynes to look for, even though they don't believe it is true?

One does get the impression that [Jagers don't get along with] Geisterdamen. Also from the same page, it appears that Geisters regard it as a reasonable fight if they have a three-to-one advantage, but don't want to face Jagers with even odds.

One of the wild Jaegers ought to be Von Pinn's "father". He should have a note that, about 30 years ago, he was captured by Lucrezia Mongfish, who did all sorts of experiments with him. She said he was going to father a new race, which sounded good until she made clear that she just wanted a blood sample. Strange woman was no fun at all.
