Of the Cinque Passi (5 steps) in Gagliarda.

Although anciently the name of Cinque Passi was corrupted, not being these in effect but are 4 and the Cadenza: nonetheless  in which following  in the same order, not intending to demonstrate rising above the others, I had intended to name them by the same names commonly used of Cinque Passi: the which are done in this manner.  First is done a Zoppetto with the right foot on the ground, climbing the left forward; then diminishing, raise the right back; and putting the point of this at the heel of the left, raise presently this left, the which diminishing it to the place where it was found first, the right is raised of new, but forward; and then lowering it, and throwing it back, do the cadenza, widening some the knees to give it grace, resting with the right back; after by opposite do the same, doing first the Zoppetto with the left, and climbing forward the right.  Be careful to always hold the legs well straight, with the points of the feet low, and the arms lowered, but wantonizing at the turn the right; the which foul sight would be holding always straight, nor would do movements with the fingers, and carry the body straight, and the head raised.

Of the Cinque Passi soprapiede (overfeet) in Gagliarda.

Raise first the left foot, holding the body turned a little in perspective to the left, pushing it forward some: then diminishing it back, as much as that the point of this arrives almost at the heel of the right, cross this right to even with the left, and 1 to 2 inches distant from it, holding the heel of the left raised with which left, raising it, give in the same place a beat: then give another in the same place with the right: at the end then lay the left foot flat, and do in the manner of a Sottopiede, climbing the right forward; then turning the body some to the right, do a Zoppetto with the left: then diminishing the right foot back, follow with the same stated rules.

(Note – I had a lot of trouble with this step.  The individual words make sense, but I can’t quite understand how the step works.  I don’t think I made any mistakes, but I might have.)

Of the Cinque Passi inrecciati (braided) in Gagliarda.

In the first beat of sound do a Zoppetto with the left on the ground, crossing the right behind to the left: in the second beat, do another Zoppetto with the left, crossing the right foot in front to the left: in the third beat, doing with the left a third Zoppetto, throw the right foot back, raising it in a straight line: in the fourth beat, diminish the right, doing in the manner of a Sottopiede to the heel of the left, which in the same time climbs some forward: and in the fifth and final beat do the Cadenza, diminishing said foot on the ground back and passing some forward with the right; and do the same by opposite.
