To the Most Illustrious and Most Excellent Lady
The Lady Princess of Squillace

Whilst Vesuvius of the inflamed front,
High splendor to the Heaven was sending, and fire,
Forth his flames about in each place,
With marvels manifest, and count.
The people run to behold it again quickly,
The grief of the path taking to game;
And so dear the life had so little
For desire to see, which burnt in that mountain.
Now to see the new burning light,
Which in you is disclosed, issues so much discerned
Puissant virtue, beauty, and courtesy.
The desirous and earnest souls run,
And of them such to her is near so much,
Which prize to such heat is necessary that it would be.

Squilina [Proper name - one of Squillace?]

In Praise of the Most Illustrious and Most Excellent Lady
Princess of Squillace

This Balletto has to be done in third, that is 2 men and 1 lady, or 2 ladies and one man: the people standing in a straight line, with the hands taken, as is shwon in the picture, that is, if there will be 2 ladies, the man will stand in the middle: and if there will be 2 men, the lady will stand there, and they will have to start at one head of the room with doing all together the Riverenza grave, and 2 Continenze; then walking without letting go hand, will be done 4 Seguiti spezzati, starting it with the left foot, and when they will be in head of the hall, they will turn two turns to the left hand, and will do another 4 Seguiti, being careful, that that who stands to the right hand has to go in middle, and that who has guided the dance has to put themselves in the place of that who was to the right hand.  Note also that each person has to do the same abovesaid time: After, as each one is returned to their place, the man which has guided the dance has to braid, or to say it better, to do the Chain, turning to  the left hand, and said braid will be as that of the Ballo named Furioso in third, doing 16 Seguiti spezzati to 2 times of the Sonata of said dance, and to the end of these all are owed to find themselves again in a triangle.

In the wheel then all together have to do 2 Passi gravi, and 1 Seguito ordinario to the left, starting it with the left, and other 2 Passi, and 1 Seguito to the right, starting it with the right.  The man which guides the dance has to do 4 Riprese with the left flank inward, with 2 Trabuchetti, and the Cadenza; he has to do the same back with the right flank outwards, doing 2 Seguiti spezzati flanked forward, and another 2 back, starting it with the left foot, then all together have to turn 2 turns to the left hand, doing 4 Seguiti spezzati, as above.  The ladies will do together the same change which the man has already done.  Jousting, all together have to do 2 Seguiti spezzati, 1 forward with the left, and the other back with the right, that is, with the left flank forward, and with the right back: then the man passes in middle of the ladies with 2 Spezzati, putting him to their places, and said ladies have to put them to the place of the man: and they will do the same another time, returning each one to their place.

After they will be turned to walk, doing 2 Passi gravi, and 1 Seguito ordinario to the left, the same to the right in the wheel, as of above.  Then the hands are taken in the manner of a wheel, and all together do 2 Passi trangati, with 2 Fioretti, and the Cadenza to the left part, starting it with the left: the same is done to the right by opposite: and forward are done 2 Seguiti spezzati flanked, and letting go the hands, they then do another 2 back; turning 2 turns to the left, and doing 4 Seguiti spezzati, with the same joust, as of above.

They are turned then to walk, doing 2 Passi, and 1 Seguito to the left, and then to the right, as of above.  To the left are done 2 Fioretti a pie pari, and 2 Trabuchetti, with 2 Passi presti, and the Cadenza, starting it with the left foot: the same is done to the right by opposite; then forward are done 2 Fioretti, 2 Passi presti, and 2 other Passi in gagliarda, and the Cadenza, turning 2 turns to the left with 4 Seguiti spezzati, and doing the same joust.  After they are turned to do the braiding, as of above and 2 times, putting each one to their place, as they were standing in the start: then taking hands, they will walk with 4 Seguiti spezzati, and letting it go, thence they will turn another 4, resting in a triangle and they will finish with the Riverenza.

Lute tablature, with the music of the sonata of the Cascarda Squilina
