To the Illustrious Lady,
The Lady Flaminia Americi Giacomelli,
Roman Gentlewoman

If were not daring to number the stars,
The birds, the fish, or moreover of the Sea the sand;
How many take the North Wind, how many bring again
The West Wind fruits, and flowers; South wind storms;
How many scents has Arabia, Sparta myrtle trees,
How many in Hibla bees, and thyme, and in Athens
How many owls there are; spires in Carena;
And how many arrows and brands does Love carry.
If not dare with the plowshare the sand
Of the depths of the Sea to furrow, and the waves;
And to bring with the hands the rays of the Sun,
Each mortal would hold closed the lips,
And the beauty, which to Flaminia the Heaven infuses
With the heart admire, and not with the words.
