To the Illustrious Lady,
The Lady Isabella Castella Malvasia,
Bolognese Gentlewoman
Would this woman be perhaps a new Table,
That all the good of Heaven in her assembles together?
Is Venus perhaps, or of three Graces the one,
O Nymph, or yet of the Sun the soul sister?
Venus she would be if she had in her hand a burning light,
Naked, if of the Graces she were some one;
If the arch, Nymph, or the cold Moon;
But this is the immortal wise Isabella.
Who here paints? Love. He was a good Painter.
And who were the pencils, that worked with him?
The stars. And the color? Heat, and frost.
As those eyes have so much virtue of Heaven,
That steal the other spirits? It is because Love
Gave them his, and he remained blind.
La Castellana (The Castellan)
Cascarda;
In Praise of the Illustrious Lady,
The Lady Isabella Castella Malvasia,
Bolognese Gentlewoman
Facing they will do the Riverenza minima: then they will follow
with 6 Seguiti spezzati, 4 in the wheel, and 2 turned to the left, and
2 Puntate, 1 flanked forward, and the other back, with 4 Trabuchetti
facing, and 1 Seguito spezzato to the left flank, and the Riverenza
presta with the right, as in Barriera,
with another Seguito spezzato to the right, and the Riverenza with the
left: after that they will do 2 Riprese, 2 Trabuchetti to the left, 1
Seguito spezzato turned to the said hand, and the Cadenza facing: to
the right they will do the same Riprese, Trabuchetti, and Seguito
spezzato turned to the right, with the Cadenza with the left facing:
starting each thing with the left foot.
In the second time, they will take the right hand, and will do 2
Seguiti spezzati; then letting it go, thence they will do another 2
turned to the left, changing place.
After that, taking the left hand, they will do the same, turning to the
right, and returning each one to their place, starting said Seguiti
always with the left foot. Beyond that they will return to do 2
Puntate flanked, 1 forward, and the other back, with 4 Trabuchetti
facing, and 1 Seguito spezzato to the left, with the Riverenza with the
right: they will do the same Seguito spezzato another turn to the right
flank, with the Riverenza with the left. After they will do 2
Riprese, 2 Trabuchetti to the left flank, 1 Seguito spezzato turned to
the left, and the Cadenza facing with the right: they will do the
same to the left flank by opposite.
In the fourth time [note: this is not a typo. The original does
not actually mention a third time.] they will do in the wheel 2 Passi
presti, and the Cadenza to the left, with 2 Riprese, and 2 Trabuchetti
to the right: the same 2 Passi presti, with the Cadenza, they will do
to the right, together with the 2 Riprese, and Trabuchetti to the
left. They will return then to do all the said parts of the
second time, beginning from the Puntate forward and back, with the 4
Trabuchetti, Seguiti spezzati, and the Riverenza, as in Barriera, to the one and to the other flank,
together with the 2 Riprese, and Seguito spezzato turned to the one and
to the other flank, as of above: then they will end the Cascarda with
the Riverenza.
Lute tablature of the Cascarda La Castellana.
