Female Clank

Historical Background

The following were notes while the character was evolving. They do not necessarily represent the way it came out.

The Clank fortune-teller. She is quite mysterious at the beginning; even now, I get the feeling that we've only scratched her surface.

From the way Payne and Marie talk about her on (v4, p68), we get the impression that her precog abilities are quite serious, but ill-understood. Her "games" appear to be representations of the world around her, with the pieces representing people -- at least, that's what the Circus folks are used to. It really isn't clear whether she's precognitive per se, or simply has near-supernatural ability to extrapolate. She communicates exclusively through her games, using metaphor rigorously in them -- for instance (v5, p33).

We should probably have a variety of game props available to use for her to communicate with. A Minchiate Tarot deck might do quite nicely for this -- expressive, and has a bunch of cards that most people don't know. We do know that her own deck has "The Device" as Trump XXI (v5, p45). This page also establishes that Payne (and, one suspects, Marie) know her games and their symbolism pretty well; we might give them a cheat sheet. Indeed, we could establish in the backstory of Circus Arrested that she has been guiding them towards the Castle.

She lives in the Props Wagon (v5, p31); that page is also the first time she appears.

The official party line is that she is a puppet, controlled by a midget (v5, p32). This is, of course, a lie; she's actually one of the greatest Clanks ever built. The puppet claim is similar misdirection to the way that the Sparks in the troupe pretend that everything they do is simply illustion. They also pretend to confide in her and tell her their problems and suchlike; officially, this talking to an inanimate object, but in reality they are apparently filling her in on what's going on. And they talk about her making her own moves as if she's haunted (v5, p33), to misdirect people about the fact that she really does make them.

Her part in the show is playing chess, so she theoretically requires a skilled chess-playing "puppeteer". Krosp volunteers for this role, but doesn't really get the chance before the truth is revealed on (v5, p45).

She was constructed by the great Spark Van Rijn, for "The Storm King" (referred to as "the Greatest King of all time"), as one of his Muses (v5, p46-47); this makes her one of the most famous Clanks ever built. Her history is told on (v5, p46-49). The Storm King's name was Andronicus Valois, and Tarvek is his direct descendant (v5, p83).

She has been increasingly despondent since Tinka was captured by Aaronev three years ago (v5, p49), shutting down for days or weeks at a time.

She carries her creator's notes, in a hidden compartment (v5, p49).

I suspect that she would not make a good character: given her mute nature, her inability to move on her own, and her precog ability, she'd be both difficult to play and dangerous to have in game. But she might make a very useful NPC, a way for the GMs to get cryptic information into the game when we need to. She'd be essentially a prophecy mechanism, and I know from experience that those can be useful. However, keeping her filled in ought to be required.

Note that her cards are [just as ambiguous] as ordinary Tarot cards are.

Amount of Character Potential: Fair (Probably too hard to roleplay, and too dangerous to have as a PC. I believe she's an NPC.)
