{{Description=200 years ago, Amagog was the greatest Spark on the continent. Or at least, he fancied himself as such. His great rival Van Rijn got all the acclaim (v5, p47), working for "The Storm King" and producing magnificently beautiful Clanks. Amagog's specialties were less pretty and spectacular -- he worked in Dimensional Mechanics and Constructs -- but he was no less brilliant. As something of an iconoclast, and possessing no skill at court politics, though, he never gained wide acceptance. He was a figure of mystery, and generally regarded as both insane and dangerous to those who didn't know him. He wasn't a conqueror in the traditional sense, though -- his distinctive hubris was that we wanted to know everything, everywhere. To that end, he created the Mirror of Amagog, a dimension-traveling device. He also created Sarah. The name "Amagog" was chosen entirely at random, but isn't hard to retrofit as "Lover of Gog". See the Wikipedia entry on Gog for a bunch of possible inspirations -- possibly Gog was the legendary First Spark in this world's biblical mythology? Or possibly a Qabalistic character? A good plot tie-in: one of the people on board the Castle is a direct descendent of Amagog, and has family knowledge, garbled over the centuries, about his ancestor. Might be one of the Hostage Squad, or might be Moloch -- I rather like "Friederich VonZinzer" as Amagog's real name. Towards the end, Amagog was attacked by the usual Peasants With Pitchforks. While not especially afraid, he realized that he had progressed beyond this world. So he moved, permanently, to Cynosure via the mirror. This is why the mirror was set to Cynosure, and why the Heterodyne Boys stumbled through to there first in the course of their dimension-hopping. Before leaving, he shifted his Castle about half out of this dimension -- this is why it has lain hidden for centuries. But his diary was taken from the Castle, and passed from hand to hand over the years. Recently, someone managed to decipher it enough to enter the Castle, and find just a bit of what was in there. That's what sets the story in motion, as everyone begins to converge on the many rumors surrounding it. Moloch is Amagog's direct descendant, and Silas is the greatest expert on his work.}}
