Hot Mulled Cider

2 quarts sweet cider 1/2 cup brown sugar
2 sticks cinnamon 1/2 tsp allspice
6 whole cloves 1 lemon, sliced
1 cup apple brandy (optional) nutmeg

Combine cider, sugar, lemon and spices in a saucepan.  Bring to a boil, stirring to dissolve sugar.  Reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes.  Remove from heat; add brandy if desired.  Strain into warm mugs and add a dash of nutmeg to each.
